Emergency lighting in Cardiff, Newport, Bridgend, Swansea, Merthyr Tydfil and South Wales
As part of any fire safety strategy consideration must be given to the use of emergency lighting in particular in parts of the building used to assist evacuation.
Emergency light fittings provide a continuous light source when power has failed this is provided by a battery. When the power fails in a building emergency light fittings will immediately switch to using the backup battery and ensure that occupants can safely see within a building. The emergency lighting should work for a minimum of 3 hours powered by the battery.
There are a variety of emergency lights including:
Emergency escape lighting – this provides lighting to enable people leaving a location when lights have failed possibly due to a fire. Emergency escape lighting provision is a requirement of The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
Standby lighting– that part of an emergency lighting system provided to enable normal activities to continue substantially unchanged. This is not a legal requirement and is a facility that may or may not be needed, depending on the use and occupancy of the premises, etc.
Escape route lighting – this provides emergency lighting to ensure that occupants of a building can safely find there way to fire exits and safety.
