An essential part of any fire safety procedure is the undertaking of regular fire evacuation drills which replicate the actions taken by staff and visitors to the premises in the event of a fire.

When undertaking a fire drill it is important that it is as realistic as possible including:

  • The sounding of fire alarms

  • Building check

  • Quick evacuation of the building

  • Identification and use of assembly point

  • Testing of the disabled evacuation plans

  • All escape routes are clear

  • Roll call

  • Clarify the duties of different staff – fire wardens etc.

  • Documentation of issues raised

At least one fire drill should be carried out every year and this must be recorded within the fire evacuation plan.
